Filled with all manners of plants and tropical fish, living in this 4-room flat situated in the heart of Singapore is akin to living amongst Mother Nature except with a colour palette of dusty green, walnut brown, navy, and white. Not surprisingly, the project draws its inspiration from nature, specifically the way plantations are typically divided and derives its name from the final sum deduced after dividing the space 4 times by the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively.

As with most HDB flats built in recent years, the household shelter takes up the bulk of the living room but in this case, it is concealed with a custom-made wood wall with grooves reminiscent of the layout of a plantation from a bird’s eye view and a chevron styled pattern that replicates the silhouette of a forest canopy. The wall isn’t solely for aesthetics either, hiding a spacious shoe cabinet within itself and acting as the backdrop for the owners’ tropical fish tank — a favourite pastime of the nature-loving homeowners. The room is then tied together with loose pieces of furniture crafted from walnut wood, a potted plant, and white oak floor tiles that extend all the way to the study for maximum visual impact.

Parts of the wall of the first bedroom were knocked down and replaced with black framed glass to create a semi-private study area for the homeowners to retreat to for some alone time. The room is sealed with a similar black framed glass sliding door to complete the look. The bespoke bookshelf was also designed in a way that alludes to the layout of a plantation with the three vertical segments all looking different from the other; each representing a different ratio of space allocated to each plot of land.

Seemingly a far cry from the initial colour palette of the living and study space, the walls of the corridor leading to the bedrooms and the kitchen are painted with an audacious shade of navy for some much needed contrast. The cabinets are made from the same wood as many of their furniture while the counters come in the same shade of navy with a clean white surface. To allude to the division concept evident in each room once more, the backsplash was arranged from the same grey tile cut into varying widths, further adding meaning to the entire design of the flat — a sort of meaning that you will only find if you know where to look.
